Our annual Meals for Christmas community initiative, which was launched in 2015, now serves over 300 individuals facing homelessness and housing insecurity in the Chicago area. Recognizing the need to enhance the physical and emotional well-being of transgender and nonbinary individuals, Life is Work identified significant gaps in support and resources for transgender and non-binary communities of color during the COVID-19 epidemic in 2020.
Despite facing numerous challenges, we persevered in reaching and providing support to transgender and non-binary people of color on the West Side of Chicago. Amidst a surge of anti-transgender legislation at both state and federal levels, the creation of a Resource Center was a monumental undertaking. Our clients have been increasingly challenged in accessing basic necessities such as stable housing, healthcare, and a reliable source of income. We remain committed to addressing these pressing issues and providing vital support to those who need it most.
